Quick Review: “Opera Software University Seminar” at Gadjah Mada University

Bismillah

I’ve attended the Opera Winfrey Show, ah I mean.. Opera Software University Seminar which held at my campus today. At the first time knowing this event, I’m sure it’s free (free as in charge), and it surely is. This event is brought to the student university in Yogyakarta, especially at UGM, by Himakom (http://himakom.ugm.ac.id, Computer Science Student Committee (?)).

And, the event is quite interesting, a lot of fun, and of course very useful. It’s presented by Mr Bruce Lawson, Mr Zi Bin Cheah and Mbak Annisa Putri, all of them came from Opera, and they DON’T give a doctrine that the attendants should use Opera (but they really hate IE, we all do hate IE), they just gave a topic about Open Web Standard.

There are many questions that came from the participants, but the most interesting question was Indra’s (he’s my friend). “Why isn’t there any addons in Opera? You know, like the Firefox’s”. Mr Lawson answered that addons is Firefox’s strength, and also it’s weakness. Because many addons just give another problems: memory leak, security stuffs, etc. Hm.. a quite rational answer. “For me, Mozilla Firefox 3.0 crashes, a lot.. ” he said. Me too.

I thought that Opera University Seminar is the smartest way to “promote” Opera. FYI, I just use Opera when I’m developing a website, and most of time, I’m just a mozilla firefox user, like Indra. And my reason to attend this seminar (besides it’s free) is that I’m a fanatic of Opera Mini (and hoping that one day I’ll be the programmer). Errr.. if Mozilla creates Firefox Mini, I don’t know which one I’ll use. I’m just a pragmatic anyway. :)

Now, Open Web Standard is still a draft, and as the tagline said “The future is here. It’s just not evenly distributed yet” — William Gibson. It is our (or people who just works as a web developer) duty to learn it so we can easily implement it in the next year. Hah, that’s all. Thank you Opera..
